Teaching Your Preschooler About Volunteering

Posted on 06-28-2017

Your preschooler is never too young to learn about caring for others, and a great way to teach them this is through volunteering as a family. There are so many amazing causes that encourage helpers of all ages, from food banks to animal shelters. Before volunteering, sit down with your child and talk to them about why you’re volunteering and what the cause means for your family. When it comes to picking a volunteer program, here are a few different types of routes to consider when choosing what fits best for you and your child.

Food banks

Many food banks rely on volunteers to feed the hungry in their communities and are in need of helpers who can organize the masses of supplies donated every day. This gives a great opportunity for families to work together on a large project fit for everyone.

Animal Shelters

While most animal shelters require their volunteers to be at least middle school or high school aged, some will allow younger children to help socialize animals with the supervision of a parent or guardian. Before volunteering with animals, make sure to communicate with your child about their expectations of how to care for animals and the reality of animal shelters.

Educational Services

Various services like “First Book” aim to help at-risk children gain a love of reading and learning and are in need of book and educational resource donations.

Nature Conservancies

One of the best ways to volunteer with your child is by getting in the great outdoors and helping take care of the environment. You can help pick up trash, plant trees and bushes, and spread mulch to make your hometown beautiful.
